Miami native and former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has formally asked soon-to-be president Donald Trump for a January 6 pardon.
More than a year after Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in 2021 — the longest sentence handed to a January 6 defendant — his attorney, Nayib Hassan, has asked the president-elect for a "full and complete" presidential pardon for his client.
On January 6, Hassan sent a nearly two-page letter to the president on behalf of Tarrio. New Times obtained a copy of the letter (which is attached at the bottom of this story).
"Granting this pardon would allow Henry to reintegrate into a family that is extremely supportive and would further demonstrate commitment to lawful, peaceful, and constructive contributions," the letter reads. "It would also enable him to support his family fully and contribute meaningfully to the community."
While Tarrio was not at the Capitol during the riot — he'd been arrested two days earlier on charges related to the burning of a stolen Black Lives Matter flag — prosecutors claimed he organized and spearheaded the Proud Boys' assault on the Capitol.
As previously reported by New Times, Tarrio had seemingly been angling for a presidential pardon after Trump won the presidential election last November.
Trump has vowed to pardon January 6 rioters, perhaps as soon as his first day in office.
"I'm going to look at everything. We're going to look at individual cases," Trump told Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker during an NBC News interview, later adding, "But I'm going to be acting very quickly."
This is a breaking story and will be updated as events warrant.
