The legendary Club Space in downtown Miami feels like it has been open forever. But the revered 11th Street compound hits a quarter of a century next month, and the team is celebrating like it's the turn of the millennium.
The club returns to its halcyon rave days on Friday, March 14, with progressive house legends Deep Dish (Dubfire and Sharam), New York's Victor Calderon, and Club Space's original owner and founder, Louis Puig.
Puig, who sold the club years ago to various investors, was a regular DJ at the venue while it was under his purview. As New Times senior music editor Jose Duran once remarked, "His name is so synonymous with the dance music institution that there couldn't be a Space without Puig."
Puig's return to the decks is a nod to the old guard for laying down the foundation that helped highlight Miami nightlife and an obvious booking for a milestone weekend.
Puig, Calderon, and Deep Dish all have their roots in Space's early days. In those days, the famed upstairs Terrace was actually roofless, and flooding was possible if the rain was heavy enough.
The following night, on Saturday, March 15, includes the Italian maestro and a revered '90s techno DJ in his own regard, Marco Carola. The former Heat basketball player turned DJ Rony Seikaly is also on the bill. The anniversary concludes on Sunday, March 16, with Francis Mercier, Marten Lou, Vanjee, and Peace Control.
Space's original location was down the street, closer to Overtown. In 2003, it moved to its two-story flagship location. Whatever the location, it isn't easy to overstate the importance of Space's footprint in club culture. The club has spawned careers, created a genuine scene, and been a refuge for ravers and attendees to enjoy music until the early morning.
Outside of institutions like Berlin's Berghain, Chicago's Smartbar, or Amnesia in Ibiza, the life of a club is a blink of an eye, with most not lasting more than five years.
While Space temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a much-need remodel last summer, the club is as popular as ever with its near-perfect sound system, production, and talent booking. The phrase "I ended up at Space" will surely be echoed for years to come.
