Since unelected tech billionaire and richest man on earth Elon Musk officially began serving under President Donald Trump as a "special government employee," Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has tirelessly worked to slash so-called "waste" and "fraud" within state budgets.
This has led to the swift cancellation of contracts and firing of workers across the country, from government watchdogs to forest service workers to even the park rangers who oversaw Florida's only manatee refuge.
While DOGE claims to have saved $105 billion so far, news organizations have challenged this claim — with a recent NPR review finding the documented savings were grossly overstated, and a Reuters analysis concluding that Musk's website is plagued by errors and corrections.
The website's digital "Wall of Receipts" showcases a list of "savings" from canceled grants, contracts, and terminated leases.
Using DOGE's website and leases documented on the United States General Services Administration's (GSA) website, New Times compiled a list of nearly a dozen federal offices that Musk's department plans to shutter across South Florida:
National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration - Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Office (Key Largo, Florida)
One of fifteen national marine sanctuaries, the office works to protect the waters surrounding the Florida Keys, from Biscayne Bay National Park to the Dry Tortugas. The lease on the almost 8,000-square-foot space reportedly costs $252,011 yearly.
National Park Service - Everglades National Park Office (Homestead, Florida)
Everglades National Park's 21,000-square foot Homestead office (with an accompanying $539,591 annual lease) houses scientists working on Everglades restoration.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration - Office of Criminal Investigations (Plantation, Florida)
The nearly 15,000-square-foot office investigates criminal cases involving food, prescription drugs, medical devices, dietary supplements, or cosmetics. The annual lease on the building is $414,703.
U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs - Seminole Agency Office (Hollywood, Florida)
The first point of contact for the Seminole Nation of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe, the Seminole Agency office provides medical assistance, ID cards, certificates verifying Indian heritage, and other types of assistance to tribal members. The annual lease on the 3,000-square-foot office space is $79,365.
U.S. Agency for Global Media - Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Doral, Florida)
The Office of Cuba Broadcasting oversees Radio and Television Martí, which have been criticized as propaganda networks that broadcast programming to Cuba from a government office in Doral. The annual lease on the 35,927-square-foot office space is $1,483,967.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) - Wildlife Inspector Office (Doral, Florida)
The office helps to stop illegal shipments and intercepts smuggled wildlife and wildlife products. The annual lease on the 7,747-square-foot office space is $268,096
Employee Benefits Security Administration - Miami District Office (Plantation, Florida)
The 16,254-square-foot office on Pine Island Road in Broward County offers information and assistance on employer-sponsored retirement benefit and health benefit plans. The annual lease is $731,478.
National Park Service - Land Resources Program Office (Naples, Florida)
The 4,862-square-foot office works to guide and support the land acquisition program for the National Park Service (NPS). The annual lease is $115,035.
National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration - Office of Law Enforcement (Sunrise, Florida)
The office helps to protect marine wildlife and habitat by enforcing local laws. The annual lease for the 1,858-square-foot office space is $51,429.
U.S. Department of State Office (Doral, Florida)
The office is partially responsible for dealing with foreign relations and managing diplomatic missions around the world. While it's unclear exactly which office is on the chopping block — Google shows both a Department of State office and U.S. Military Entrance Processing Station at the same address — the annual lease on the 3,076-square-foot office is $112,278.
Office of the Secretary (Miami, Florida)
It's uncertain what particular business is handled at this office (the building appears to be home to several government entities, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Attorney's Office), though
the lease for the 2,357 square foot space ends in late September, according to the GSA. The annual lease is $69,950.
