Last night, Premio Lo Nuestro returned to the Kaseya Center for its 37th edition, bringing together Latin music's biggest stars from far and wide to see who would take home an award.
On the red carpet, New Times spotted some notable acts, including Danny Ocean, Gordo, Darumas, DND, Bad Gyal, Deorro, and Becky G, who were all nominated for several awards.
Before the show began, DND played their newest track, "Tinder," on the outside stage of the Kaseya, dressed in classic Billionaire Boys Club attire from their mentor Pharrell.
Inside the arena, the ceremony with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air himself, Will Smith, and DJ Khaled dancing a quick salsa with India Martinez on their new track, "First Love." We also got a quick rendition of "Miami" before Thalia joined them with the Sound Machine for a tribute to Gloria Estefan's "Conga."
There were some clear favorites when it came to the performances last night. El Alfa's medley of hits, which included club favorites like "Este," "4K," and "La Mama de la Mama," was one of the best performances of the show. It made everyone get out of their seats and dance. And though El Alfa promised this was a "farewell" performance, you can never believe an artist saying they're retiring from the game.
Also among the night's highlights was Becky G's emotional tribute to her grandparents with the track "Querido Abuelo" from her album Esquinas.
Although Becky was the most nominated female artist last night with ten nominations, she was also almost shut out of taking home any trophies, only winning "Mariachi/Ranchera Song of the Year" for "Por El Contrario" alongside Angela Aguilar and Leonardo Aguilar.
Myke Towers, nominated for nine awards last night, was shut out entirely.
Who did win the majority of the awards? Colombian superstar Shakira.
The pop phenomenon, who is currently on tour in Latin America, couldn't attend the award show. However, she won an impressive six awards for Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, including "Album of the Year." While she couldn't be in Miami, she did livestream a performance of her song, "Ultima," directly from her tour.
Another big winner who wasn't in attendance, Karol G, came away with five awards, winning both "Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Year" for "Si Te Hubiera Conocido," proving once again that she is Latin music's biggest pop star at the moment.
Carín León was also a big winner on a night that saw a lot of Mexican artists get some notable nominations, winning "Mexican Music - Male Artist of the Year," "Mexican Music - Song of the Year," and "Mexican Music - Album of the Year," and more, for a total of five wins. He was also part of the performance honoring Spanish composer Manuel Alejandro, which also featured appearances from Alejandro Sanz, Laura Pausini, Nina Pastori, and Edgar Barrera, who performed tracks like "Mi Amante Amigo," "Ese Hombre," and "Dueno de Nada."
Mexican music was highlighted throughout the show, with Oscar Maydon performing his hit song "Tu Boda," Xavi playing "La Diabla," and Tito Double P teaming up with Belinda for a performance of their song "La Cuadrada." However, last night's highlight for Mexican music was easily Pepe, Leonardo, and Angela Aguilar's tribute to Paquita del Barrio, which featured the tracks "Me Saludas a La Tuya" and "Tres Veces te Engane."
La India also gave an outstanding performance, performing a medley of her most iconic songs, "Nunca Voy Olvidarte," "Dicen Que Soy," and "Mi Mayor Venganza," before being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Fernandez was given the Excellence Award after performing songs "El Ley del Monte" and "Estos Celos," which I was surprised to hear echoed and sung inside an arena in Miami.
The 2025 edition certainly had some clear favorites. However, some outstanding shows and performances showed that they can still put on a fantastic show that crosses boundaries and showcases the best of the modern Latin music scene.
