You are probably noticing that temperatures are dropping in South Florida. But when you wake up on Friday, it will be even cooler.
"Light northerly winds and clear skies overnight will result in wake-up temperatures tomorrow in the 40s and 50s!" National Weather Service (NWS) Miami wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
As of 6 a.m. Friday, it will be 53 degrees in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, the NWS forecasts. A little further north in West Palm Beach, it will be 52 degrees. By noon on Friday, temperatures will be in the low to mid-70s.
Although these temperatures may surprise us, there have been colder March temperatures in South Florida. You have to turn back the clock quite a bit. According to the weather service's climatological records for Miami, the record low for March 7 is 35 degrees, set in 1920, For March 8 it's 42 degrees, set in 1962.
While it might be chilly outside, it probably won't be cold enough to paralyze South Florida iguanas. The cold-blooded critters are known to fall into a "frozen" state and plummet from frees when temperatures dip into the 40s and below. Also, this cold front won't be in town for too long.
Highs on Saturday and Sunday are expected to reach the low 80s. High temps will be a little cooler — in the 70s — on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week, the NWS predicts.
