Just moments after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States yesterday, his administration swiftly made changes to the White House website.

This included expected changes, such as the removal of former President Joe Biden's and former Vice President Kamala Harris' names and bios. However, it also involved the removal of other content — such as the section of the site featuring the U.S. Constitution, the government’s reproductive rights website (ReproductiveRights.gov), and the site's Spanish-language section.

As of Tuesday afternoon, visitors to WhiteHouse.gov/es are met with a 404 error and an English-language "GO TO HOMEPAGE" button. Internet archives reveal that the button originally displayed a slightly more ominous message: "GO HOME."

This wouldn't be the first time the Trump administration made such a move. In 2017, during Trump's first term in office, the landing page for the White House's Spanish-language communications went dark. It was restored in 2021, during former President Joe Biden's tenure.

The administrations of former Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Biden all maintained a Spanish-language version of the official White House site.

As of 2019, Spanish was the most common non-English language spoken in U.S. homes, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. As of 2022, the Hispanic population was the largest minority group in the country.

Back in 2015, during a televised Republican Presidential Debate, Trump chided former Florida governor Jeb Bush for speaking another language on the campaign trail.

"This is a country where we speak English, not Spanish," Trump said.
