Nearly 24 years ago, revelers welcomed the first sunrise of the new year at Club Space's terrace.

On March 18, 2000, Club Space opened its door, giving clubgoers who didn't want to stop partying after Miami Beach's 5 a.m. last call a 24-hour haven just across the causeway downtown. The vision of nightlife veteran Louis Puig, Club Space has brought dance music's top talent to the Magic City for a quarter century now. (Puig sold Space to a group of investors in 2013.)

Of course, a lot has changed in 25 years. For one, Space opened at 142 NE 11th St., one block east from its current location. It wouldn't move to what is now known as Space until 2004, where, for a short time, it rebranded itself as Space 34 to signify the move.

If you want to travel back in time and see what Space was like 24 years ago, YouTuber Ivano Bellini is at your service. He uploaded a short eight-minute clip of the terrace as revelers celebrated New Year's Eve 2002. Back then, the terrace was more of a patio in the adjacent parking lot; however, all the telltale signs that this is a party at Space are there. Beats at sunrise? Check. Cryo blasts? Check. Revelers in sunglasses? Check.
In an era before cell phones could record high-quality videos, this glimpse into the Miami club scene of yesteryear is a rare treat. It is also a reminder that even as the decades pass, people never stop craving the kind of escapism only a dance floor can provide.

Come back next week when New Times speaks with Louis Puig about Club Space's first year and the obstacles it faced.
